Respect from Rooney and reluctance from Riley

Some things never change, despite all the media chatter about a new level of 'respect' that is to be shown by players towards officials; Wayne Rooney was back to his best at Old Trafford today, demonstrating just why the despicable chav is about as admired as a piece of globular green sputum outside of Manchester United supporting circles. Rooney had no right to abuse Riley, as the gaunt and

Arsenal authors battle for Amazon sales. Well, almost

My friend Alex Fynn has co-written a new book,  Arsènal : The Making of a Super-Club When I saw that his book was the No.1 Arsenal book and the No.1 Football Club book, I emailed my congratulations. Alex doesn’t reply to my occasional emails, but when we talk on the phone he thanks me for them . His co-author is Kevin Whitcher, a good guy, the editor of The Gooner. When The Professor first came out, he interviewed me for the fanzine. He asked me a very penetrating question about something some...

The Same Old Story; Arsenal In A Nutshell

The season has just started, which means that I, no matter how sad it may seem, suddenly have a purpose in life again. The grass of The Emirates has just been mowed with extreme, almost perverse, precision - God, it looked perfect for yesterday’s encounter with newly promoted WBA, Tottenham’s ambitions, however ridiculous they may [...]

Arsenal 1 - 0 WBA: Pre-season pays off with carbon copy goal

Arsenal 1 - 0 West Bromich Albion (Nasri 4) The margin of victory could have been greater, but much like in last season’s tricky opener against Fulham, the important thing is that we won.  It is results than generate momentum, and with two victories under our belt already this season, we have little to complain about. Nasri shines in the August sunshine

Arsenal 1-0 WBA The sun was out, there were a couple of chilled beers sitting in my stomach and I must confess, it was glorious to be back watching football at the Grove. It’s funny though, because every Arsenal fan I spoke to or overheard before the game was cautious in the extreme. “We might be able [...] SHARETHIS.addEntry( { title: "Nasri shines in the August sunshine", url: "http://eastlower.co.uk/?p=468" } );

Empty seats, Gallas's rant, Ade's boos and goodbye to a true Gooner.

A few topics.Firstly, the empty seats at the Grove. It's a mockery that the club continue to claim that these matches are 'sell-outs' when any idiot can look up and see that shedloads of the seats in the stadium remain empty. The problem is, as many have already stated, that these seats are sold seats that haven't been occupied. The majority are season ticket holders who, for one reason or another, haven't turned up. Given that we're still in August and a lot of people are still on their hols...

Lone Goal Unsettles Arsenal

The old adage is that an early goal settles the nerves, but only if it is followed up by a quick second. It was Roy of the Rovers, or rather Sami of the Rovers after only 3 minutes 44 seconds. It was the dream debut, turning up like Pires in the penalty box, and simply tapping the ball in unlike Hleb.

First Three Points In The Bag

My Arsenal are back, and so too the delicious pre-match breakfast (cheers Rincon). Forecasts of inclement weather proved, thankfully, wide of the mark. The season’s opening day did not provide too much comfort for those who look had predicted gloomy beginnings. As we had half-expected Emmanuel Eboue was switched into the centre of midfield and in [...]

Arsenal v W.B.A - Player Ratings

By Atishay AgarwalIt was like watching last season all over again. We took the lead against a lesser side, dominated possession and passed the ball around with ease all day, but failed to kill them off. In fact, we wasted so many dangerous positions and some glorious chances, and on occasions our attackers looked bereft of ideas in the final third. It’s the first game of the season, though, and what was most important was to get all three points. Here are the ratings:Almunia - 6 – He was larg...

Tasty goal by Nasri on his debut

Very low-key first day back at the Emirates. Lovely goal after three minutes, good buzz for ten minutes. But the second goal didn't come and., incredibly, West Brom keeper Scott Carson didn't make his first save of the second half until the 83rd minute. That was from a header by Robin van Persie , who came on as a sub The goal was very tasty, a sweet move down the left, a good run to the near post by Samir Nasri, who sidefooted deftly past Carson and into the far corner of the goal. Nasri is ...

Morning Grovers! I had the pleasure of being at the Emirates for the first game of the season, and what a pleasant day it was!
